Our story
Afro Geek is a movement built to celebrate and elevate the rich tapestry of African creativity within geek culture. Founded in 2022 by Neo Mothoagae and Tapelo Zama, Afro Geek was born out of a shared vision: to create a dedicated space where African voices could thrive in gaming, comics, cosplay, and technology. After witnessing the gap in representation for African creators and the lack of spaces dedicated to showcasing their work, Neo and Tapelo set out to build a community that not only highlights talent but actively nurtures it.
Afro Geek is more than just an organization; it’s a vibrant, ever-growing community passionate about Afrofuturism, diverse storytelling, and the incredible creative talent across the continent. Our mission is to foster a sense of belonging, provide platforms for representation, and demonstrate that geek culture is and always has been an integral part of the African narrative.
Since its founding, Afro Geek has focused on empowering creators, inspiring the next generation, and connecting African talent to global opportunities. Through festivals, workshops, exhibitions, and digital platforms, the organization champions originality, amplifies underrepresented voices, and fosters collaborations that redefine what it means to be a geek in Africa.
At its core, Afro Geek is a celebration of identity, creativity, and possibility. We are building a legacy where African stories are not only told but embraced, where culture meets technology, and where the future of geekdom is unapologetically African.
